MOURNING MEACHUM was born in 1829 in Anson County, North Carolina. Her mother was EDY MEACHUM (1810 – 1870). Her father was BARNES BENNETT (1799 – 1849), a slave owned by JAMES C. BENNETT. A slave sale indicates that BARNES, his mother MILLIE, and three siblings were purchased in the mid-1700s.
JAMES C. BENNETT owned the house where the movie The Color Purple was filmed in 1985. BARNES is more than likely to have been buried in the slave cemetery that’s located to the left side of the home. JAMES C BENNETT was shot during a rampage in March of 1865. Before he died he requested to be buried in the slave cemetery. She married HENDERSON DOUGLAS in 1850. HENDERSON was born in August 1822 in Anson County, North Carolina.
MOURNING died on February 1, 1924 in Gullege, Anson, North Carolina. She is buried in the Sandy Ridge Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Morven North Carolina.
